Jagdeep Dhankar elected India's next Vice President [06 Aug 2022]

Jagdeep Dhankar, the candidate of the Centre-ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has been declared the winner of the Vice Presidential election. Dhankar, 71, will be administered the oath to the office on August 11, a day after the tenure of incumbent Vice President Venkaiah Naidu is scheduled to expire. Jagdeep Dhankar, the former West Bengal governor, defeated joint opposition's nominee Margaret Alva in the Vice Presidential elections.

DRDO successfully test fires indigenously developed laser-guided ATGMs [04 Aug 2022]

Indigenously developed Laser-Guided Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) were successfully test-fired from Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Army at KK Ranges with support of Armoured Corps Centre & School (ACC&S) Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. The missiles hit with precision and successfully destroyed the targets at two different ranges. Telemetry systems have recorded the satisfactory flight performance of the missiles. The all-indigenous Laser Guided ATGM employs a tandem High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) protected armoured vehicles. The ATGM has been developed with multi-platform launch capability and is currently undergoing technical evaluation trials from 120 mm rifled gun of MBT Arjun.

Star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu (49kg) went on a record-smashing spree, claiming four of them in a power-packed performance, to claim India's first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Chanu smashed the Commonwealth and CWG record in snatch. She obliterated the Games record in clean and jerk as well as total lift.

Delivery of Indigenous Aircraft Carries (IAC) Vikrant [28 Jul 2022]

Indian Navy has created maritime history by taking delivery of the prestigious Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) ‘Vikrant from her builder Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi. Designed by the Indian Navy's in-house Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built by CSL, a Public Sector Shipyard under the Ministry of Shipping (MoS), the carrier is christened after her illustrious predecessor, India's first Aircraft Carrier which played a vital role in the 1971 war. The 262 meter long carrier has a full displacement of close to 45,000 tonnes which is much larger and more advanced than her predecessor. The ship is powered by four Gas Turbines totaling 88 MW power and has a maximum speed of 28 Knots. Built at an overall cost of close to Rs. 20,000 Crores.

France opener Gustav McKeon became the first teenager to score a T20I century in men’s cricket. Mckeon smoked a 61-ball 109 against Switzerland in Vantaa. His knock was studded with five fours and nine sixes. It was only the second international match for the youngster.

Indermit Gill will be the second Indian, after Kaushik Basu, to become the chief economist of World Bank, the international financial institution that grants loans to middle and lower-income countries. Gill's tenure will start from September 1, 2022, the World Bank said in a press release issued on July 21. Gill is currently World Bank's vice president for equitable growth, finance, and institutions, where he led work on macroeconomics, debt, trade, poverty, and governance. Between 2016 and 2021, he was a professor of public policy at Duke University and a non-resident senior fellow in the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution.

Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah born in 1956 and he is the eldest son of the Emir of the country Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad.

Dinesh Gunawardena Takes Oath as Sri Lanka PM [22 Jul 2022]

Dinesh Gunawardena was sworn as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka by President Ranil Wickremesinghe along with 17 other cabinet ministers. Guna¬wardena, parliamentarian of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party, took his oath in the capital Colombo in the presence of other senior legislators. During the Bharatiya Janata Party and Biju Janata Dal coalition government in Odisha, She was the Minister of State with independent charge for Commerce and Transport from March 6, 2000, to August 6, 2002, and Fisheries and Animal Resources Development from August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004. She is a former Odisha Minister and an MLA from the Rairangpur assembly constituency in the years 2000 and 2004. She was conferred the Nilkantha award for best MLA by Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2007. She was the first woman Governor of Jharkhand. She was the first female tribal leader from Odisha to get appointed as a governor in an Indian state.

Himachal Pradesh Becomes First State in India to Connect All Registered Commercial Vehicles Equipped With VLTD with ERSS [19 Jul 2022]

Himachal Pradesh became the first state in India to link all registered commercial vehicles equipped with Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) with Emer¬gency Response Support System (ERSS) in July 2022. Now, these vehicles can be tracked anywhere in the country through VLTD. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur formally inaugurated the system at a program organized at Peterhof, in Shimla. He also introduced the facility of a panic button for the safety of women and children in public vehicles.

15th FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2022; Netherlands Retains Title [17 Jul 2022]

15th edition of the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2022 was successfully organized in Spain and the Netherlands in July 2022, featuring a total of 16 teams across the globe in four pools. A total of 44 matches were played across two venues at Terrassa in Spain and Amstelveen in Nether¬lands, starting with the pool stages from July 1 and concluding with the final on July 17. Defending champion and the co-host of the mega Hockey event the Netherlands defeated Argentina 3-1 in the final on July 17, 2022, at Terrassa to win the 15th edition of the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2022.

EU formally accepts Croatia as 20th euro zone member [13 Jul 2022]

European Union finance ministers formally approved Croatia becoming the 20th member of the euro common currency at the start of 2023. The European Council, the grouping of 27 EU governments, adopted three legal acts required to allow Croatia – an EU member since 2013 – to introduce the euro on January 1. One of those acts set the conversion rate for entry at one euro to 7.53450 Croatian kunas, with Croatia now having a few months to prepare the practicalities for the currency switch. To adopt the euro, Croatia had to fulfill the criteria of price and exchange rate stability, sound public finances, and moderate long-term interest rates, all measured against EU benchmarks.

Successful debut flight for Europe's Vega-C rocket [13 Jul 2022]

Europe has given a successful debut to its new Vega-C rocket. The medium-lift vehicle was sent up from French Guiana to deliver seven satellites to orbit, the largest of which will test Einstein's general theory of relativity. Vega-C has enormous importance for Europe's continued access to space. It's needed to fill a big gap in capability now that Russian rockets are no longer available because of the war in Ukraine. Vega-C will be the obvious option for many, although even before Wednesday's successful maiden flight, the new Italian-led rocket system was fully booked through 2023, 2024, and 2025.
