Israel Becomes first Country to Permit Drones in Civilian Airspace [21 Feb 2022]

Israel becomes the world's first country to allow drones to operate in civilian air space. The Ministry of Transport and Road Safety of Israel announced, the certification for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to operate in civilian air space. Hermes Starliner Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), is the first UAV to receive such a certification.

Asia's Biggest Bio-CNG Plant Gobar-Dhan Inaugurate in Indore [19 Feb 2022]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the "Gobar-Dhan (Bio-CNG) Plant" in Indore via video conferencing. The Indore Bio-CNG plant has been constructed under the overarching principles of "waste to wealth" and "circular economy" for maximizing resource recovery. The Gobar-Dhan plant, with a capacity to treat 550 tonnes of segregated wet organic waste per day, is expected to produce around 17,000 kg CNG and 100 tonnes of organic compost every day.

Prof. Karanam Umamaheshwar Rao takes charge as NIT Rourkela director [18 Feb 2022]

Professor K. Umamheshwar Rao has assumed office as the new director of NIT Rourkela on February 18, 2022. He will be succeeding Prof. Simanchalo Panigrahi, who was appointed as the interim director in October 2021. Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao was previously serving as the Director of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), also known as NIT Surathkal. Before joining here, he was a faculty for almost three decades at IIT Kharagpur. Some of his important portfolios include Chairman (Estate), and Vice Chairman of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). He was also the Head of the Mining Engineering Department during 2006-08 and 2010-14.

Ratan Tata honoured with Assam's highest civilian award 'Assam Baibhav' [16 Feb 2022]

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma conferred the "Assam Baibhav", the State's highest civilian award to eminent industrialist and Tata Trust's Chairman Ratan Naval Tata at a function held in Taj Wellington Mews, Koloba, Mumbai. As an industrialist & philanthropist, he has made an exceptional contribution towards furthering cancer care in Assam. The "Assam Baibhav" Award" carries a citation, a medal, and a cash amount of Rs 5 lakh.

India's First National Maritime Security Coordinator Appointed [15 Feb 2022]

The Government of India has appointed the country's first maritime security coordinator (NMSC) to ensure effective coordination and cooperation among multiple central and state authorities dealing with the domain from the coast to the high seas. Vice-Admiral G. Ashok Kumar, who retired as the vice-Navy Chief in July last year after over 39 years of service, will be the NMSC in the National Security Council Secretariat under national security advisor Ajit Doval.

Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISROs) Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV- C52) successfully injected Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-04) with 2 rideshare satellites viz. INSPIRE sat-1 and INS-2TD into a sun-synchronous polar orbit of 529 km altitude from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota Range (SHAR), Andhra Pradesh (AP).

CBSE appoints IAS Vineet Joshi as New Chairman [14 Feb 2022]

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the appointment of Vineet Joshi, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Education, as its new Chairman. He succeeds former CBSE Chairman Manoj Ahuja, who was appointed as the OSD in the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

Tata Sons on February 14 appointed Ilker Ayci, who was until recently the chairman of Turkish Airlines, as CEO & MD of Air India. Fifty-one-year old Ayci is a 1994 alumni of Bilkent University’s Department of Political Science and Public Administration. After a research stay on political science at the Leeds University in the UK in 1995, he completed an International Relations Master’s programme at the Marmara University in Istanbul in 1997.

Atal Tunnel Officially Recognised as Longest, Highway Tunnel above 10,000 feet by World Book of Records [09 Feb 2022]

The World Book (WB) of Records United Kingdom (UK) officially certified India's Atal Tunnel as the World's Longest Highway Tunnel above 10,000 feet (3048 Meters) from the Mean Sea Level (MSL). This recognition was given during a ceremony in New Delhi. The award for the same was received by Lieutenant General Rajeev Chaudhry, Director General of Border Roads (DGBR).

Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, Director General of Border Roads Organisation (DGBR) received the award for the stupendous achievement of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in constructing this engineering marvel connecting Manali to the Lahaul - Spiti Valley. World Book of Records UK, is an organisation that catalogs and verifies extraordinary records across the world with authentic certification. The Nation’s pride, the visionary project of Atal Tunnel was dedicated to the Nation by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on October 03, 2020. The 9.02 km long, strategically significant, Atal Tunnel, that runs under the ‘Rohtang Pass’ was constructed on the Manali - Leh Highway under the challenging conditions of freezing temperatures in extremely difficult terrain. Prior to the construction of the tunnel, the highway remained closed during the winter season for six months, isolating Lahaul & Spiti from the mainland. Construction of this tunnel has reduced the distance on Manali - Sarchu road by 46 km and travel time by four to five hours, providing all-weather connectivity on the Manali - Leh axis.

Shri Mital has also served on Boards of various organisations including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, GIC Re, etc. During his service, Shri Mital has served in varied capacities in various Ministries and Departments of the Government.

JNU Appoints Pune University Professor Santishree Pandit as its First Woman Vice-Chancellor [07 Feb 2022]

Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit has been appointed as the first woman Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Pandit who is currently a political science professor at Savitribai Phule University in Maharashtra was appointed the top post. The 59-year-old Pandit is also an alumna of JNU where she pursued her MPhil as well as Ph.D. in International Relations. Pandit began her teaching career at Goa University in 1988 and moved to Pune University in 1993. She has held an administrative position in various academic bodies. She has also been a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), and the Visitor's nominee to central universities. In her career, she has guided 29 PhDs.

Construct Bridge Over Mahakali River [07 Feb 2022]

India and Nepal, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the cons¬truction of a motorable bridge over the Mahakali River connecting Dharchula (India) with Dharchula (Nepal), under Indian grant assistance. India will bear all the costs of constructing the bridge and the preparation of a detailed project report for the bridge has already been completed and the construction work of the bridge will start soon and will be completed within three years. The project will improve cross-border connectivity between Nepal's Sudur Paschim province and India's Uttarakhand across the Mahakali river where close people-to-people links exist between communities on both sides of the border.

The Central government has appointed Dinesh Prasad Saklani as director of NCERT for a period of five years or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is the earliest. Saklani is a professor with the department of history, ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology at HNB Garhwal University, Uttarakhand. He is also the director of the Chauras Campus of the university.

Cochin Shipyard delivers three Floating Border Out-Post vessels to BSF [28 Jan 2022]

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), under the Ministry of Ports, Ships and Waterways, has successfully delivered the second lot of three Floating Border Out-Post (FBOPs) vessels to the Border Security Force. Indonesia has announced that its new capital will be called Nusantara, meaning "archipelago" in Javanese. It came as parliament approved a bill to relocate the capital from Jakarta, which is rapidly sinking. The idea of building a new capital 1,300km (800 miles) away on the island of Borneo was first proposed in 2019. Jakarta has become crowded, polluted and is sinking at an alarming rate due to the over-extraction of groundwater. Home to more than 10 million people, it sits on swampy land on the large island of Java.
