The objective is to fortify the ministry's computer systems against the relentless surge of malware and ransomware attacks witnessed in recent years.
Maya OS: A Homegrown Solution
Maya OS, a native operating system, is built on the foundation of the open-source platform Ubuntu. It's been meticulously crafted by a collaborative effort involving the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), and the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Boasting heightened security measures when compared to Windows, Maya OS seamlessly supports a wide array of applications and software, which are prevalent in the operations of the Defence Ministry.
User-Friendly Interface Inspired by Windows
Maya OS presents a user interface that is intuitive and reminiscent of the Windows environment, making it a particularly appealing choice for users who may not be extensively familiar with Linux. The inception of Maya OS was in 2021, in response to the alarming rise of cyber-attacks targeting governmental and defense systems. Remarkably, the OS was conceived and developed within a mere six-month timeframe.
The name "Maya OS" draws inspiration from the Indian concept of illusion. Its very essence is to entrap hackers within an illusionary environment when they attempt to breach the security of Defence Ministry computer systems.
Understanding Ubuntu
Ubuntu, a well-regarded operating system, is founded on the principles of security, customization, and open-source collaboration. This OS is officially distributed in three editions: desktop, server, and a core version tailored for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and robotics. All of these iterations can operate either independently on a computer or within a virtual machine environment.
Key Features of Maya OS
Maya OS offers an extensive set of features, including seamless cloud storage integration, robust full disk encryption, digital signatures for secure communication, biometric authentication for heightened identity validation, and an innovative component aptly named "Chakravyuh". Chakravyuh functions as a formidable endpoint solution, acting as a protective barrier that effectively thwarts cyber threats by blocking any attempts by cybercriminals to breach the system.
Rollout Timeline and Future Adoption
Presently, Maya OS is in the evaluation phase. Reports indicate that the deployment of Maya OS across computers within South Block is slated to be completed by August 15th. The overall objective is to fully transition to Maya OS across all systems by the close of the year.
The Defence Ministry emphasizes that the adoption of Maya OS not only serves as a substantial enhancement to the security of its computer infrastructure but also propels indigenous innovation while significantly reducing dependence on foreign software solutions.
